In March of this year, Senator Ray Lesniak from New Jersey filed a lawsuit against the U.S. federal government.
The lawsuit points out that the federal ban on sports betting, which is effective throughout the USA, with specific exemptions for Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon -- where sports betting is allowed, is dicriminatory against the other states.
The New Jersey governor's support for Lesniak's initiative follows Delaware's decision to offer government sponsored sports betting in an attempt to boost the state's budget.
Corzine stated "Delaware's entry into sports wagering and table games is a serious threat to the both the casino and horse racing industries in New Jersey. We simply cannot afford to sit back and let neighboring states press an unfair advantage against us anytime, and certainly not in the midst of this global economic crisis."
